Covert trafficking of women for immoral purposes has been exposed by numerous crime fiction novelists such as Andrea Camilleri, Helene Tursten, and others (this is the practice of transporting women from one country to another for the purpose of prostitution). So when I stumbled upon this newspaper story about a Japanese steamship allegedly trafficking sex trade workers, I thought the whole thing sounded surprisingly modern for the 1890’s. Over the years the trafficking of women for the sex trade has become more and more sophisticated yet just as harsh. However, sometimes a story in isolation can be misleading. For example: in the story of the Fushibi Maru, there seems to be a problem. Compared with the other stories from California about the way the Japanese sex trade operated, the Fushibi Maru did not fit the pattern. Not only did it seem different from the regular pattern of sex trade worker trafficking, but there were some, how should I say, feasibility problems with the Fushibi Maru saga. I began to wonder if this story was real or just a fabrication. The story was printed as if the event was real without any caveats to cast doubt about its authenticity; however, there are elements in the story that strain credibility. In this book I will investigate the plausibility of the Fushibi Maru story. Was the story a hoax or moral judgement of the Japanese by the British In the end the Fushibi Maru report may have been drawing attention to a different pattern of trafficking women for the sex trade. The norm for Britain/Europe was trickery, for Japan human livestock commerce.
